What is the particulate filter?
The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a component of the exhaust system responsible for retaining solid particles (soot) generated during diesel combustion. It is composed of a ceramic structure with microscopic channels that capture the soot and store it until it is eliminated by regeneration. Over time, this filter becomes saturated. If not cleaned properly, it adversely affects the engine and can completely block the exhaust system.DPF cleaning methods
There are several ways to clean a particulate filter, depending on the level of clogging, vehicle condition and workshop resources.Passive regeneration
- It occurs automatically when the vehicle is driven at high temperatures (highway, sustained revolutions).
- Soot burns naturally.
- It is effective if the driving style allows it.
Active regeneration
- The vehicle itself injects additional diesel to increase the exhaust temperature and burn soot.
- Activated from 45-60 % filter saturation.
- May fail if the engine is shut down before completion.
Forced regeneration
- It is performed in the workshop with diagnostic equipment.
- Raises engine speed and temperature to clean the DPF.
- Requires supervision and experience.
- Does not remove accumulated ash.
Chemical method
- A solvent chemical product is applied to the DPF.
- Removes soot and part of the ash.
- Requires caution and subsequent rinsing if internal.
Ultrasonic method
- Deep cleaning in laboratory.
- The filter is disassembled and immersed in an ultrasonic tank with cleaning liquid.
- Removes soot and ash.
- Effective but more expensive and slower method.
How to perform DPF cleaning?
Preventive maintenance
- It is performed before the DPF is completely saturated.
- Ideally every 30,000-40,000 km, depending on vehicle use.
- It can be done by active regeneration, specific products or cleaning machines such as those of Oxyhtech.
Curative method
- It is applied when there are already failures, loss of power or error in the control unit.
- In these cases, professional cleaning with injection equipment, OBD diagnosis and drying cycle is recommended.
Manual cleaning
- Requires disassembly of the DPF.
- It is cleaned with pressurized water, decarbonizing products or ultrasound.
- The most effective method, but also the most laborious and expensive.
Benefits of DPF cleaning
Proper particulate filter cleaning offers benefits for both the vehicle and the workshop:- Improved engine performance: by removing the exhaust blockage, the engine regains response, power and stability. Improved combustion and reduced turbo stress.
- Fuel savings: A clean DPF allows the engine to work at optimum pressure. This reduces consumption by up to 10-15 %.
- Reduction of pollutant emissions: Less soot means less opacity, less particulate matter and lower NOx levels. Ideal for passing the MOT without incident.
- Prevention of costly repairs: A clogged DPF can damage the turbo, sensors, catalytic converter or EGR. Periodic cleaning avoids these breakdowns.
- Extending vehicle life: Keeping the exhaust system in good condition reduces overall engine wear and avoids constant forced regeneration cycles.
